The Danish Health Authority recommends that women consume 400 micrograms (µg) of folic acid from the time they consider pregnancy and the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. A supplement of folic acid can prevent congenital malformations of the brain and spinal cord in the child. Folic acid Folic acid is a B vitamin. Folic acid is found naturally in e.g. spinach, legumes, brown beans, bread, semolina and in certain berries and fruits, but you cannot get enough through the diet alone in connection with pregnancy
Effect
Folic acid supplement of 400 micrograms (µg) from approx. 3 months before and up to 3 months into pregnancy reduces the risk of giving birth to a child with congenital malformations of the brain and spinal cord (neural tube defects). Several studies suggest that the risk can be reduced by up to 40% with the use of folic acid during pregnancy.
The fetal neural tube normally closes at 22-29. the day after fertilization and later develops into the brain and spinal cord. Folic acid plays an important role in this process. If the neural tube does not close, it leads to a congenital malformation. The deformities vary from mild cosmetic to severe disabilities or stillbirth. It can be, for example, spina bifida, which can cause serious disabilities, or lack of development of the brain. Failure to develop the brain leads to the child dying before or immediately after birth. Cranial malformations may also be involved.
