The Danish Health Authority recommends that all pregnant women take a daily supplement of vitamin D throughout pregnancy. However, several major research projects also indicate that vitamin D deficiency can reduce fertility in both men and women.

Vitamin D and Women's Fertility

In general, approximately 1 in 5 Danes have vitamin D deficiency in the spring when levels are at their lowest after a long winter without sun. This can have an impact on fertility because several significant research projects have shown that vitamin D deficiency can have a negative effect on fertility.

A 2019 study revealed that vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent among women experiencing reduced fertility. In the study of 500 infertile women, it was found that 84% of them had vitamin D deficiency, a significantly higher proportion compared to the average woman of reproductive age.

Regarding fertility treatment, several studies have demonstrated that women with normal vitamin D levels in their blood (above 30 ng/mL or higher) have a better chance of achieving pregnancy and avoiding miscarriage. It is believed that vitamin D affects the receptivity of the uterine lining to a fertilized egg. Therefore, several Danish fertility clinics recommend that women undergoing fertility treatment have their vitamin D levels measured before starting treatment. However, it is important to note that large-scale research studies and randomized trials have not been conducted. Therefore, it cannot be conclusively determined that women with vitamin D deficiency can improve fertility through vitamin D supplementation.

Vitamin D and Men's Fertility

Research from Rigshospitalet has shown that treatment with vitamin D has a beneficial effect on sperm production in infertile men with severe vitamin D deficiency. If the man does not have a deficiency or only mild deficiency of vitamin D, vitamin D supplementation has no effect on fertility.

In the study at Rigshospitalet involving 330 infertile men with vitamin D deficiency, they were either given placebo medication or vitamin D. The study showed that men with reduced sperm production who received vitamin D supplementation doubled their chance of spontaneous pregnancy compared to the group of men who received placebo medication. The conclusion was that vitamin D is important for the sperm's ability to reach and fertilize the woman's egg.
