Bio-Folin is a dietary supplement for those planning pregnancy or already pregnant. The supplement is manufactured under pharmaceutical control. Bio-Folin contains 400 micrograms of folic acid.

The Danish Health Authority recommends that women consume 400 micrograms (µg) of folic acid when considering pregnancy and during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Supplementing with folic acid can help prevent neural tube defects in the baby, which are congenital malformations of the brain and spinal cord. Folic acid is a B vitamin that naturally occurs in foods such as spinach, legumes, brown beans, bread, grains, and certain berries and fruits. However, it is difficult to obtain sufficient amounts through diet alone during pregnancy.

Effect

Supplementing with 400 micrograms (µg) of folic acid from approximately 3 months before pregnancy until 3 months into pregnancy reduces the risk of giving birth to a child with neural tube defects. Several studies suggest that the risk can be reduced by up to 40% by using folic acid during pregnancy.

The fetal neural tube normally closes between 22-29 days after fertilization and later develops into the brain and spinal cord. Folic acid plays a vital role in this process. If the neural tube fails to close properly, it can lead to a congenital malformation. These malformations can range from mild cosmetic issues to severe disabilities or stillbirth. Examples include spina bifida, which can cause severe disabilities, or inadequate brain development.

Folic acid 400 mcg from Dansk Farmaceutisk Industri is a vegan dietary supplement that contains 400 mcg of folic acid per tablet.
